Rental vehicle excess

If, as a result of an unexpected event, the rental vehicle you have hired is stolen or damaged during your journey, we will reimburse you for any non-refundable excess payable to the rental vehicle company of up to $5,000.

As all rental vehicle companies and their policies are different, we recommend you check what their excess is before you complete the hire agreement, and if their excess is equal to AUD $5,000 or less.

Motor cars and motor homes

We cover the excess on rentals of standard model motor cars or a motor home with a capacity to carry 8 persons including the driver.

You must hold a valid driver’s licence as required by the country you are in to be covered under your policy.

Remember a rental car must be rented by you or someone named on the certificate of insurance, from a licensed rental vehicle agency, to be covered under your policy. To ensure you remain covered, it must be driven by a named driver on the rental vehicle agreement, you must not be in breach of any local driving laws or rules, or have breached the terms and conditions of the rental vehicle agreement.

Off-road use is not covered, so make sure you only use rental vehicles on formed or paved roadways and car parks.

There is no cover for any damages, compensation and legal expenses for which you are liable, due to your use of a rental vehicle, causing injury (including death) of another person, or loss or damage to property other than your rental vehicle.

Mopeds and motorbikes

There is no cover under the rental-vehicle excess benefit for rentals of a moped or motorbike, unless you select the moped and motorbike cover option and pay an extra premium to have cover. This cover must be confirmed on your certificate of insurance.

Even if you’ve added moped and motorbike cover, there is no cover if you’re riding a moped or motorbike (whether as the driver or passenger):

  • where the engine is more than 200cc;
  • where you are not wearing a helmet on your head;
  • where the driver does not have a valid driver's licence as required from the country of permanent residence;
  • where the driver does not have a driver's licencse as required in the country you are in, for the same class of moped or motorbike being ridden;
  • in a professional capacity;
  • where you are racing, including against time and/or in timed events, of any sort;
  • where you are participating in a competition which involves monetary prizes;
  • which isn’t hired from a licensed vehicle agency;
  • offroad;
  • you’re not a named driver on the rental vehicle agreement; or
  • if you or the driver were breaking any law including driving laws or highway rules. For example, without limitation: speed limits and blood alcohol limits.

There is no cover for any damages, compensation and legal expenses for which you are liable, due to your use of a rental vehicle, causing injury (including death) of another person, or loss or damage to property other than your rental vehicle.
