In the early hours of the morning, on Thursday 12 March 2020 (AEDT), the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to be a pandemic.

Am I covered?

If you purchased your policy prior to Friday 31 January 2020 at 12.00pm (AEDT) for travel to and/or from any country, including transit, (except mainland China), there is no cover under the:

  • TravelCare Policy - Section D2 and Section D3

for any events relating to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) because this has now been notified by WHO as a pandemic.  

We will consider claims under this section if you had already cancelled or changed your journey prior to Thursday 12 March 2020 at 6.00am (AEDT). 

If you purchased your policy after Friday 31 January 2020 at 12.00pm (AEDT) for travel to and/or from any country (except mainland China), there is no cover* for any event relating to the coronavirus (COVID-19) because this is no longer an unexpected event.

* Except for: TravelCare Policy - Section D1.6.

As this is an evolving situation, we advise customers to check this page on a regular basis for the latest guide to countries experiencing an epidemic.

Am I covered?

If you purchased your TravelCare policy before Friday 31 January 2020 at 12.00pm (AEDT), for travel to and/or from a country listed below (including transit), there is no cover under section:

  • D2: Cancelling or changing your journey before you leave
  • D3: Changes to your journey once you have left

for any event(s) relating to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) after the country’s epidemic cut-off date.

We will consider claims under this section if you had already cancelled or changed your journey prior to the epidemic cut-off date.

  • Italy - Friday 6 March 2020 at 2.00pm (AEDT)
  • Japan - Friday 6 March 2020 at 2.00pm (AEDT)
  • South Korea - Friday 6 March 2020 at 2.00pm (AEDT)

Novel coronavirus outbreak - Update (following WHO classification as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 31 January 2020)

On Friday 31 January 2020, the World Health Organization announced that the Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak had met their required medical threshold to classify the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

If you purchased your policy after Friday 31st January 2020 at 12.00pm (AEDT), there is no cover* for any event relating to the Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) because this is no longer an unexpected event.

* Except for Section D1.6.
