Australian bushfires

Over the last few months, Australia has been experiencing devastating bush fires which have severely affected the people, wildlife and nature of Australia. These fires have resulted in the government declaring a state of emergency. We are deeply saddened to see this beautiful country in dismay. Our thoughts go out to those who have had their lives impacted by this tragic event and to those who are working endlessly to stop the devastation.

Policy Wording

If you have been directly affected by this event, there may be provision for you to claim under your travel insurance policy. All claims will be assessed based on your policy cover.

This event is considered as a ‘Natural Event’.

Any ‘Natural Event’ (affecting travel-related transport, infrastructure, systems and services associated with your journey) which starts before your start date of insurance is excluded from cover in the following circumstances:

  • If the ‘Natural Event’ only affects travel-related transport, infrastructure, systems and services associated with your journey for 24 hours or less, then cover will resume under and in accordance with your policy when travel-related transport, infrastructure, systems and services (previously affected by that natural event), have resumed and operated normally for at least 24 hours.
  • If the ‘Natural Event’ affects travel-related transport, infrastructure, systems and services associated with your journey for more than 24 hours, then cover will resume under and in accordance with your policy when travel-related transport, infrastructure, systems and services (previously affected by that natural event), have resumed and operated normally for at least 21 consecutive days.

Depending on the nature and/or scale of the natural event a whole or part of a country may be excluded.

Claims Information

All claims will be assessed based on your policy cover. Certain limits, conditions and exclusions will apply. Please refer to your policy documents you received when you purchased your travel insurance.

When you are ready to submit a claim, you will also need to send us your supporting documents, such as:

  • Original receipts for any additional expenses you may incur.
  • Documents (such as itineraries) that show us the cost of your original and your altered travel plans.
  • Documentation from your service provider stating their policy regarding compensation/refunds relating to delays or cancellations caused by this event.

Costs that will not be covered by your policy include (but is not limited to):

  • Used travel arrangements.
  • Costs incurred where your travel has not been directly affected.
  • Alternate travel upgrades (than originally booked).
