Comprehensive Travel Insurance
Travel insurance for a single international trip
International Comprehensive travel insurance provides cover for Australians travelling overseas on a single trip.
Whether it’s a long‑planned holiday or a once off overseas journey, travel can come with unexpected challenges. From medical issues to travel disruptions, the right cover can help protect you when things don’t go to plan.
Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s International Comprehensive policy provides cover for a single return journey overseas, helping Australians travel with confidence when the unexpected happens.
Why medical cover matters when you’re overseas
Healthcare costs overseas can add up quickly, particularly in countries where medical treatment is provided privately. While Medicare plays an important role in Australia’s healthcare system, it generally doesn’t cover the costs of treatment you receive outside Australia.
International Comprehensive travel insurance includes cover for medical treatment and evacuation overseas, helping protect you from potentially significant out‑of‑pocket expenses if you become sick or injured while travelling.
Medical and evacuation cover includes
- Overseas medical treatment and hospital care
- Doctors’ visits and prescribed medication
- Specialist treatment
- Medical transport and evacuation
- 24‑hour emergency assistance
- Support from qualified medical advisers
- Guarantees for medical expenses and assistance contacting family
Medical and evacuation cover is Unlimited under this policy, subject to the Product Disclosure Statement.
Includes cover for cancellation fees and prepaid travel costs if your trip is cancelled or changed due to an illness, injury or natural disaster. Plus, cover for additional costs to help you attend a special event including a wedding or sporting event.

Cover designed for unexpected travel disruptions
International Comprehensive travel insurance provides cover for a range of situations that could affect your trip, helping reduce financial stress if plans need to change.
Cancelling or changing your journey before departure
If an unexpected illness, injury or natural disaster means you need to cancel or change your trip before you leave Australia, cover may be available for certain cancellation fees and prepaid travel costs. Additional cover may also apply in some situations to help you attend a special event.
Higher cancellation cover options are available if you want increased protection. You can choose between $2,500, $5,000, $10,000 and Unlimited cover.
Changes to your journey while you’re overseas
If something unexpected happens while you’re already travelling, International Comprehensive travel insurance may help with certain additional transport, accommodation, meals or activity costs. Cover may also apply if you need to cut your trip short and return to Australia earlier than planned, subject to policy limits and conditions.
Baggage and personal items
Cover is available if your baggage or personal items are lost, stolen or damaged during your trip. If your bags are delayed, misdirected or misplaced, cover may also help with the cost of essential clothing and toiletries.
Item limits, depreciation and sub‑limits apply as outlined in the policy wording.
Rental vehicle excess and personal liability
If you hire a rental vehicle overseas, International Comprehensive cover includes cover towards rental vehicle excess in certain situations. Personal liability cover is also included and may help protect you if you’re found legally responsible for damage or injury to others while travelling.
Optional cover you can add
Every trip is different, which is why we offer optional cover to match your travel plans. You can choose from a range of add‑ons to extend your policy for certain activities or types of travel including:
- Moped and motorbike cover
- Skiing and snowboarding cover
- Cruise cover
Optional benefits apply as described in the relevant sections of the Product Disclosure Statement.
Understanding your excess
Your excess is the amount you pay towards a claim for each unexpected event, unless the Product Disclosure Statement says otherwise.
A higher excess can help keep your premium down, while a lower excess means you’ll have less to pay if you need to claim. You can choose the excess that feels right for your travel style and budget when you buy your policy.
If you don’t make a selection, the default excess is $200. Available options are $0, $100 or $200.
