Pre-existing conditions are not automatically covered under your travel insurance policy. We want to help you understand what a pre-existing condition is and what you need to do if you have any so that you know what you are covered for under your travel insurance policy.
What is a pre-existing condition?
We consider a pre-existing condition to be any illness or injury which you are aware of, or a reasonable person in your circumstances ought to have been aware of, for which advice (including awaiting test results), care, treatment, medication or medical attention has been sought, given, or recommended within the last 3 years, regardless of whether a medical diagnosis has been made.
What conditions must I declare?
If you have type 2 diabetes or a heart, vascular or lung illness such as hypertension/high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack, angina, atrial fibrillation, palpitations, stroke or asthma, and it meets our pre-existing condition definition, you must declare these when you purchase your policy.
If you choose not to declare type 2 diabetes or a heart, vascular or lung illness, your policy will be void, and we may not be able to look after you on your trip.
For all other pre-existing conditions, you can choose whether you want to declare these during the application process.

What do I need to do to seek cover?
During the policy application process, you will be asked a few questions about whether you have any pre-existing conditions.
If you have type 2 diabetes or a heart, vascular or lung illness, which you must declare, you will be taken to a simple online medical assessment to complete.
If you do not have type 2 diabetes or a heart, vascular or lung illness but you have other pre-existing conditions, you will be given the option to complete a medical assessment.
Following the medical assessment, the outcome of whether we can offer you cover for your condition(s), and any additional premium required, will be displayed to you before you decide whether to proceed with the policy. If we are able to offer cover for your pre-existing conditions and you would like to have the cover under your policy, you must pay the additional premium.
If we do not offer cover, or if you decline to pay the additional premium to have cover for your pre-existing condition(s), they will not be covered under your policy.
If we do not offer cover, or if you decline to pay the additional premium to take out cover for, your type 2 diabetes or heart, vascular or lung illness, we will not pay any claims directly or indirectly related to any type 2 diabetes, heart, vascular or lung illness.
How do I seek cover for my pre-existing condition after purchasing my policy?
Once you have purchased your policy, you are no longer able to declare any pre-existing conditions and we will not pay any claims directly or indirectly related to these pre-existing conditions under your policy.
If you have forgotten to seek cover for your pre-existing conditions during the application process, you will need to apply for a new policy to complete a medical assessment. Once the outcome of the medical assessment is displayed to you, you can decide if you wish to proceed with the extra cover and purchase a new policy, and then cancel your old policy. This can all be done on our website.
If you cancel your policy during the 14-day cooling-off period, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel after the cooling-off period, a $35 cancellation fee will be charged. Please be aware that if you cancel and purchase a new policy, your start date of insurance will be the date of purchase of the new policy.
How do I know if I have a pre-existing condition?
If you are unsure about the name or details of your pre-existing condition, please check this with your doctor and get a copy of your medical records. If you have questions around what you should or shouldn’t declare on your travel insurance policy, please contact us for advice.
It is important to remember that it is your (the customer’s) responsibility to declare any pre-existing conditions you wish to seek cover for.
Are there any conditions you do not cover?
We do not offer cover for the following conditions pre-existing conditions:
- Any pre-existing condition which is not a covered condition.
- Any Heart, Vascular, or Lung Illness or Type 2 Diabetes that arises after your start date of insurance where you had any Heart, Vascular or Lung Illness, or Type 2 Diabetes pre-existing condition prior to the start date of insurance that has not been accepted for cover by us. Such reasons may include, but are not limited to, where we have declined to offer cover or where we have offered cover during the application process but you chose not to pay the additional premium required.
- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
- A sexually transmitted infection (STI).
- Travel exhaustion.
- Alcohol or substance addiction.
- Pregnancy, except for pregnancy up to and including the 20th week, providing the pregnancy was without complication prior to your start date of insurance. Cover is for medical complications only. Common symptoms, including breast tenderness, constipation, fatigue, frequent urination, heartburn and nausea (morning sickness) are not covered.
What happens if I don’t tell you about my pre-existing condition?
If you do not declare any heart, vascular or lung illnesses or type 2 diabetes, your policy will be void and we may not be able to look after you on your trip.
Any other pre-existing conditions that you choose not to seek cover for, or do not tell us about, will remain excluded under your policy. You can still buy a policy with us, but you will not be covered for any claims directly or indirectly related to your pre-existing conditions.
What is a covered condition?
A covered condition is:
- a pre-existing condition that you disclosed to us at the time of your application, paid any additional premium required and for which we have confirmed cover to you by email; or
- an illness or injury that arises after the start date of your insurance, but prior to the start date of your journey, for which you have disclosed to us, and any additional premium required by us has been received by us and we have confirmed cover to you by email.
What if something happens or changes before I depart?
It is important to notify us of any changes to your health before you travel so we can confirm what you are covered for and any additional premium required for this cover. We will confirm any change to your cover in writing, so you can relax on your holiday, knowing exactly what you’re covered for. If you do not tell us about any change to your health, you will not be covered for any claims directly or indirectly related to that change in health whilst you are overseas.
What happens if I have to make a medical claim?
If for any reason you have to make a medical claim, we would look at the medical report from the overseas treating doctors, as well as any relevant history from your local GP, to determine if the claim is related to a pre-existing condition or not.
