Medical emergencies and hospital bills

If you need medical assistance during your journey, the hospitals and health care facilities in the United States are excellent. Unfortunately, they are also very expensive.

We’ve paid hundreds of medical claims for medical care required in the USA, including $99,000 for surgery for appendicitis, $164,000 for gallstone surgery and $182,000 for surgery on a fractured leg. We also happen to know through experience, that rattlesnake anti-venom costs $20,000 per vial and most victims require a minimum dose of 4 – 6 vials, costing up to $120,000!

Medical costs don’t always end with hospital care. If you have a serious medical emergency; you might need a medical evacuation back to Australia. Even if it’s a broken leg – you may need an upgrade your ticket for the flight home.

Our TravelCare policy allows you to relax in the knowledge that you won’t have to foot the bill yourself. Keep a copy of your policy certificate with you, in case you need to present it to a hospital or medical professional. In some cases, the sooner you can prove you are covered, the faster you will receive treatment. We’ll email it to you as soon as you purchase your policy, so you can keep it in your inbox on your smartphone, or save it to your smartphone to access.

Car rental excess cover

Driving is a great way to experience America and see some of its true beauty. You can legally drive on an Australian full driver’s license in the USA for up to 12 months. Vehicle insurance is compulsory in the USA, but should you be involved in an accident, the excess is covered by TravelCare for up to $5,000 per journey.

Stay safe, be aware of the driving laws of the country you visit and find out about some of the weirdest driving laws here.

Be aware while travelling

The United States train system is world class and a very low cost way to cover huge distances easily. Domestic air travel is also a relatively low cost if you want to get to a destination a little quicker than a train or rental car. Getting around the cities or towns on public transport is also very easy - subway trains are very safe, reliable and cheap, as are buses in most cities.

Always keep your eyes on your belongings in any public area or on public transport - thieves look for open opportunities and tourists can be easy prey.

Entry visas to the USA – be prepared!

The USA is very strict about who enters their country. If you don’t have the correct visa, or follow their entry requirements, you won’t be let in. It’s that simple.

Make sure you have met all the requirements before booking your trip to the USA. If you’re travelling to the USA for less than 90 days, you may be able to apply for entry under their Visa waiver program - check online to see if you qualify: www.cbp.gov/esta

If you get turned away at the border and don’t have the correct visa, you won’t be covered by your travel insurance.
